Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

“Where do you see yourself in 5 years?”

Sigh.
That classic interview question that makes many generalists either laugh nervously or want to reply:“No idea.”

If you’re someone with broad interests, a dynamic career path, or a preference for variety, this question can feel a bit ridiculous.
Because let’s be honest:
Everything changes — you, your work, your passions, the world.

Still, the question isn’t entirely pointless. Its value lies in this:
It invites you to pause and reflect on things like:
– What do I really want more of in my work?
– What matters to me now?
– What direction feels exciting — even if I don’t know the whole map yet?

You don’t need a rigid five-year plan. Especially for generalists, it’s often more helpful to focus on the next meaningful step.
→ Keep checking in with yourself
→ Be willing to pivot
→ And give space to what energizes and inspires you

So maybe the better question is:
👉 What do you want to create more of in your work — starting now?
👉 And what’s one small step you can take in that direction?
